KHOLUI, lacquer papier-mache miniatures.
Kholui is among the most ancient villages in the Vladimir-Suzdal area. Legend has it that arts and crafts were practiced in these parts from as early as the time of the Tatar-Mongol invasion. In the 1230-40s the highly developed urban culture of Northeastern Russia was almost wiped out by the Tatar-Mongol hordes. By the 18th century lacquer snuffboxes decorated with miniatures and made in England, France and Germany had become fashionable. One of the greatest European centers for such items was Johann Stobwasser's manufactory in
Braunschweig. In 1795 the Russian merchant Pyotr Korobov visited the Braunschweig works and his enterprising mind quickly grasped that cheap and simple articles could be mass-produced using this very durable combination
of materials. Within a year he had opened his own factory on the outskirts of Fedoskino. At first it employed just over twenty people. It made most of its money from manufacturing the varnished peaks of military caps and

All the items you see on our web site we buy directly from the artists and producers regardless of what far-away region of Russia they are located in. We do not work with dealers. Sections of the menu

Our web page comprises nine sections. In the menu there are blue buttons for each section. Names of these sections: Lomonosov porcelain, Gzhel porcelain, Verbilki porcelain, Mstera, Kholui, Palekh, Fedoskino correspond to the names of world famous producers of porcelain and lacquer boxes. You can find additional information about the history of these crafts on the first page of each section. Section dedicated to Gzhel porcelain contains pictures of the items we sell together with photographs and brief biographies of the artists who created them. In each section we present only items produced by one particular producer. Sections Souvenirs and Amber may contain items by different producers.

    There are also four dark blue buttons in the menu:

How to navigate through our web site

You can access our collection in several ways. You can use the menu or enter the general search system where you can search by keywords.

There are several search options:
If you know name or code of a particular item:
  • You can use our general search system. Enter a keyword (or keywords) or just the first few letters of a keyword and the search system will search through the whole of our collection. This is a very useful tool which you can find at the bottom of the menu. This tool is especially useful when you are looking for something in particular.
  • If you know the name of the section:
  • You can find names of all sections in the menu. But many sections have sub-sections. Enter the name of the sub-section you want to visit, for example, dolls, and the search system will display its contents in the form of a list.
  • Artist search engine
  • Artists - In our collection you will find many items by artists who are well-known in Russia and abroad, including the USA. Many avid collectors have favourite artists that they follow and learn about. Just enter the name of the artist you are interested in.
  • Search by price range
  • Price - you may search for the items you want by dividing the collection into price ranges. Enter the name of the section and the price or simply the price. Do not forget to put $ before the price, otherwise in your order there may appear unnecessary figures having nothing to do with the price.
  • And finally, we also recommend you going through the whole web site or just the sections you are interested in. This won't take long as at our web site all items in sub-sections are presented in the form of Thumbnails (small pictures). Thus, we manage to speed up the downloading and to make our site more informative.
  • Note! If we don't have the item you want to order in stock (Buy now and Add to basket are missing on the page and instead you can read "Sorry. The item is curently unavailable.") we can order them specially for you. When you contact us (our phone and fax numbers as well as our E-mail address you will find at the end of each page of our web site) indicate what items you are interested in and do not forget to specify the names and the codes of such items. Please, include the Sales Tax ID Number effective in your state into your request. After we receive your information it will take us 2-3 days to find out how soon we will be able to execute your order. If you are satisfied with the result you will have to pay 50% of the price of your order in advance. The remaining amount you will have to pay after your order goes through customs clearance.
    Note! In the descriptions of some pieces you can come across with the following: This article is produced only upon a special order or Highly artistic piece, produced only by a special order. Almost all pieces descriptions of which contain such phrases are unique. It is unlikely that any such piece will be available with us at the moment you make your order. If you want to buy such pieces you have to send us a separate order by E-mail, by mail or by fax. Please, include the Sales Tax ID Number effective in your state into your request. After we receive your order we will immediately contact the producer or the artist and will inform you about how long it will take to execute your order within 2-6 days. If you are satisfied with the result you will have to pay 50% of the price of your order in advance. The remaining amount you will have to pay after your order goes through customs clearance. Please remember that you cannot return of change such unique pieces unless they prove to be poor quality.

    How to make an order and to pay for it

    Items can be purchased directly from the web page. We use a secure server with Cardservice International which allows us to encrypt all the information in RC4 1024-bit encryption with SSL Version3. and we take every precaution to protect your information. Today this is a standard for Internet as regards the security and information encryption.
    We accept credit cards: American Express, Diner's Club, Discover, Mastercard, Visa, Check.
    Online - it is the fastest way for you to make an order.

      There are two options for making an online order:
    • If you are looking for something in particular and want to buy only one item click on Buy now. Fill in the form that will appear on the screen and click on Continue.
    • If you want to purchase several items or you just do not know how many items you want to purchase click on Add to basket. After you finish selecting your purchases click on Order. Check the list of the items you selected and then fill in the form and click on Continue.

    We will process your order and will send it to you by UPS Next day air early AM (or you may choose another shipping method out of 12 options) within 24 hours if you used our online order form. The list of the couriers we suggest depends on the country where the order comes from.

    Attention! Russian Classics shall not be liable for any possible slight delay in receipt of orders by our clients in case such delay was caused through the fault of the mail service. We will spare no effort to deliver your orders on time.

    Recommendation: In case your delivery address is outside the US and you wish to receive your order within 10 days at the latest we recommend you to send us a letter in advance and indicate your delivery address, items you wish to order and the date when you wish to receive your order at the latest. We will send you an answer and indicate the exact date we deliver your order.

    Other payment methods
    If you do not want to send your credit card information via the Internet you can use other payment methods.
    Look through the collection at our web site and make your choice as if you were ordering on-line (don't worry, you won't have to pay now) but do not enter your credit card information into the order form, indicate only your name, address and telephone number. Print out your order and fax or mail it to us. You can also E-mail it to us as a separate file.
    If you decide to mail your order we highly recommend you to contact us by phone and to check weather the pieces you want are available at the moment, so that we put them aside for you. You definitely do not want someone ordering online to buy them before your letter reaches us!

    Ensuring the privacy of your information is important to us! We do not share, sell or trade the information that you submit to us. This includes Email addresses, names, billing addresses, telephone numbers, credit card information, purchase history or any other information. We highly value your trust and will never disclose your information. We do not sell or share secrets!

    Delivery
  • All purchases are carefully packed and their delivery is insured. Usually we deliver purchases by UPS Next day air early AM but we can also use other services provided by UPS like Next day air, 2nd day air, 3 day select, Canada standard, Worldwide expedited, Next day air intra (Puerto Rico), Next day air saver, 2nd day air by AM, Ground, Worldwide express plus, Worldwide express.
  • Warranty
  • We check every item twice: when we receive it from the producer and before delivery to the customer. We try to sell only best quality objects.
  • All items bear 30 days warranty providing for full reimbursement of their cost. If you are not satisfied with the items you purchased (for any reason!) you can return them to us and we will reimburse you for their full price or you can exchange them for other items, or you can maintain a credit with us - the choice is yours! Just contact us, tell us the name, code and number of the item you purchased and the date of your order. All items you return must look the same as when they were purchased and accompanied with the receipt. Delivery and insurance of the returned items will be your responsibility. We will appreciate if you indicate the reason why you make the return, though it is not necessary.
